Mapping trachoma in Kaduna State, Nigeria: results of 23 local government area-level, population-based prevalence surveys

Summary

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of trachoma in each local government area (LGA) of Kaduna State, Nigeria. In 2013 a population-based prevalence survey was conducted in each district according to the methodology of the Global Trachoma Mapping Project. The surveys showed that Kaduna State is relatively hypoendemic for trachoma.

To reach the WHO trachoma elimination thresholds for active trachoma and trichiasis, provision of community-based trichiasis surgery for 11 LGAs, and implementation of the A, F and E components of the SAFE (surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness and environmental improvement) strategy in one LGA will be needed. The study also draws attention to the need to improve access to appropriate water and sanitation facilities for the local population.
