Accuracy of school-based vision screening by teachers in Pakistan: a qualitative study

Summary

This study was a qualitative process evaluation using semi-structured interviews with 14 teachers and three ophthalmic specialists. Data collection took place from April to June 2018 at the schools or hospital where the respondents worked.

Findings suggest that there should not be many doubts about teachers’ ability to accurately screen and refer children for specialist vision care. With proper training and support they certainly can. Better understanding of how an expanded role for teachers can best be accommodated, in an already heavy school workload, is important for ensuring proper support and quality control.
