Care and management of female genital schistosomiasis: exploration of the challenges in Nigeria and identifying innovative solutions to address the scourge

Summary

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a neglected gynaecological condition that arises from chronic complication of schistosomiasis infection. In Nigeria, the burden of FGS is largely unknown, and many cases of FGS are misdiagnosed due to poor levels of awareness in endemic communities and among health workers. This mixed methods study investigates the prevalence of FGS and its associated risk factors among reproductive-aged women in schistosomiasis hotspot communities in Ondo and Kebbi states. It builds on earlier research supported by the CouNTDown Consortium in Ogun state.

Main objectives

  • To estimate FGS burden in project areas
  • To assess associated risk factors in project areas
  • To understand challenges associated with seeking care
  • To evaluate the performance of CouNTDown community level FGS screening tool in community settings
  • To explore the cost of implementing the screening tool and colposcopy diagnosis in project areas

Policy and practice implications

The results will inform guidance on the diagnosis and management of FGS in resource-limited areas.
