Legal protection for disability discrimination in employment

Summary

This study will comparatively examine the factors for the successful legal protection of the rights of people with disabilities in employment in Uganda and Bangladesh. The intention is to look at the role of the legal system in ensuring the implementation of legislative provisions on the rights of people with disabilities. As such, barriers of access, power dynamics and legal risk for employers are some of the key factors the research will explore.

Objectives

The study will answer the following research questions:

  • What are the factors for the successful legal protection of the rights of people with disabilities in employment in Uganda and Bangladesh?
  • What factors determine whether the legal system is capable of protecting those rights?
  • What factors determine whether people with disabilities look to protect their rights through the legal system?

Policy and practice implications

We will develop resources to share the research findings in other countries where Sightsavers works to stimulate discussion about similar challenges. This work will feed into addressing the broader challenges that Sightsavers and other actors in the sector face in policy implementation, including reframing the narrative away from the language of the so-called ‘implementation gap’.
