The Climate Health in Africa Integrated Risk Research (CHAIRR) Project

Overview

This collaborative project led by the Walker Institute at the University of Reading aims to provide a comprehensive, fine resolution picture of the impact of climate change on the epidemiology of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in 10 districts in Malawi.

The NTDs considered are: onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil transmitted helminths, lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, human African trypanosomiasis and leprosy.

Main objectives

  • To produce area-based climate risk assessments and storylines detailing plausible climate futures, overlaid with the health and welfare effects
  • To project likely scenarios for each of the named NTDs, using the above storylines
  • To establish viable “no regret” adaptation actions, developed through consultation and workshops with Malawian leaders on climate change, NTDs and local level governance

Policy and practice implications

The outputs will inform policy-makers and support their planning of adaptation measures to reduce health risks posed by NTDs.
