Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) remains a neglected sexual and reproductive health (SRH) condition, predominantly affecting women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa. This review summarises current developments on FGS burden, prevention, diagnostics, integration, policy and community engagement.
The authors propose seven priority actions: 1) Position FGS as an SRH rights issue, 2) Integrate FGS prevention into health services and expand access to praziquantel, 3) Strengthen data systems, 4) Enhance cross-sectoral collaboration, 5) Develop and disseminate normative and technical guidance, 6) Advance diagnostics, therapeutics and operational research, 7) Transition to sustainable, integrated health system financing.
