Prevalence of trachoma in Gambella Region, Ethiopia: results of three population-based prevalence surveys conducted with the Global Trachoma Mapping Project

The purpose of this study undertaken in 2013-2014 was to determine the prevalence of trachoma in Gambella, Ethiopia. A population-based prevalence survey was conducted in three evaluation units (EUs) according to the methodology of the Global Trachoma Mapping Project.

The study concluded that both the prevalence of active trachoma (TF) and the prevalence of trichiasis was above the WHO threshold for elimination as a public health problem in each of the EUs: therein calling for the rapid scaling up of the WHO SAFE strategy (surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness, and environmental improvement) across the region.
