The Gambia trachomatous trichiasis surveys: results from five evaluation units confirm attainment of trachoma elimination thresholds

This paper presents the results from surveys for trachomatous trichiasis (TT) in five evaluation units (EUs) in The Gambia.

The results showed that all five EUs had an age-and gender-adjusted prevalence of TT unknown to the health system less than 0.2% (the WHO threshold for elimination). Three of the five EUs had a prevalence of 0.0%.

This data contributed to the validation, in 2021, of The Gambia as having achieved national elimination of trachoma as a public health problem.
