This paper explores the changing dynamics of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) amid evolving disease patterns, declining funding and the drive towards universal health coverage. Utilising data from the Expanded Special Project for Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (ESPEN) website and Sightsavers, an assessment of historical trends and future forecast needs are shared.
Findings indicate significant reductions in treatment requirements for trachoma, lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, while highlighting ongoing demand for deworming interventions targeting soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis.
The study discusses the policy and programmatic implications of these shifts and offers practical insights to support NTD elimination and strengthen health systems in resource-limited settings.
