Inclusion as societal impact: lessons from post legislative participatory research on disability‑inclusive policymaking in Kenya

Journal: Societal Impacts

Summary

This article examines the decade-long process that led to Kenya’s Persons with Disabilities Act 2025. People with disabilities and their representative organisations helped lead the research as steering committee members, co-investigators and co-analysts. Their involvement strengthened their ability to analyse policy and evidence, built relationships with researchers and policymakers, and influenced how evidence is understood and used in disability-inclusive policymaking. The article shows that meaningful involvement can be both a route to wider policy change and a valuable societal impact in itself.
